LSU’s Golden Band from TigerLand plays halftime at the New Orleans Saints-Detroit Lions game Saturday.  I love this.  It makes me feel like Louisiana is one big family.  And if you listen to how many people in the Dome know every tic and chant of the crowd participation steps in the pre-game show, it’s even more clear how much overlap there is between the fan groups!  GEAUX. TI. GERS.

My God. If ever a game needed to just end in a tie, that was it. But holy hell, Geaux Tigers!

Interesting fact I learned via Twitter today:

Tyrann “Honey Badger” Mathieu, LSU’s corner/nickelback who has been getting some mild, “oh, here’s the best defensive player who won’t win the Heisman” Heisman talk, has a pet turtle named “Columbus.”  I don’t know, ya’ll.

The Auburn/LSU Box Score Is Just This Photo
From Spencer Hall, my favorite SB Nation writer:
“It is nothing personal, Auburn. It’s just that you came between Barkevious Mingo and the quarterback, and that’s a really dangerous place to be.  Mingo, a.k.a. The Steampunk Emperor, had two sacks of LSU’s six, but even then the stats don’t really add up to the full glory of the Bayou Bengals’ 45-10 elimination of Auburn in Baton Rouge. Just look at that photo. That’s what it was like for four quarters in every phase of the game.”
I hate Auburn’s guts.  So I feel they deserved every point, backbreaking hit, and embarrassing sack.  And rewatching this epic beatdown again today, it is almost as beautiful as when I watched it from the south endzone.
Almost.

Careful moving into the SEC--that first step's a doozy →

“If Texas A&M football coaches watched the controlled, legal violence on display in Thursday night’s LSU-Mississippi State pugilistic throwback to leather helmets and no facemasks — not fancy little retro tops and hats — they may be calling their athletic directors and chancellors soon.

“About that move to the SEC,” let’s not rush into anything,” Aggies coach Mike Sherman, who still has the Nike marks on his team’s forehead from a 41-24 trampling at the feet of LSU last January. “And just wondering about one thing, would we be in LSU’s division? Like, we’d have to play those guys every year?”

If LSU, which may have its best team in history, keeps playing like it has so far this season, SEC TV could drive away more new members than attract them. The Tigers have defensive ends that run like defensive backs and defensive backs that move like those vampires in “True Blood.”

LSU’s wins over Oregon and State looked unfair. Referees are double checking the number of players LSU has on the field, and defensive coordinator John Chavis keeps rotating personnel groupings as if he actually needs to make match-up changes. And now LSU has a quarterback (Jarrett Lee) who thinks he’s Greg McElroy and a tailback (Spencer Ware) who thinks he’s a combination of Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson. Yes, LSU is Alabama, and Alabama is LSU.

You sure you want a slice of this, A&M? You haven’t competed much in the Big 12. You think you’re going to come over here and be relevant? Did you watch the game?

I guarantee Oregon coach Chip Kelly would advise his allies west of the Rockies against a move to the SEC. He probably thought he was a great coach last Christmas with a 12-0 record. He’s 0-2 in the SEC with the national championship loss to Auburn and a 40-27 pasting by LSU that was much worse than the score. He was so crestfallen after the game, his team beat Nevada 69-20. You think he’s venturing south any time soon?

Slive may seriously consider blacking out that Nov. 5 Crusades clash between No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama in the state of Texas.

If the arms race continues on the Western front of the SEC the way it is at LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, Slive may need a new member to stay at 12.

Because Mullen, who might be a national contender in another league, sounded a bit like he was looking toward the greener, softer pastures of the Big 12, Pac-10, Big Ten or maybe the ACC or Big East after his bloody loss to the Tigers.

“We’re trying to build a championship program here,” said Mullen, who apparently thought he was on his way there after going 9-4 last season with a bowl win and a 4-4 record in the West that may be the highlight of his resume.

“Every week, we’re playing championship teams,” he said. “In five days, we played the defending national champions (Auburn), and tonight we played the No. 1 team in the country, which I’m sure they are at this stage of the season. Those are big humps to get over right there.”

Interestingly, State did as well against Auburn (34-41) and LSU (6-19) as did Oregon (19-22) and (27-40) with a 20-point differential to a 16-point differential. And to a man, LSU players will tell you they definitely felt like they were more in a game Thursday than they were back on Sept. 3.

How would you like a little of that every year, SEC pledges?

“It’s amazing,” Mullen said. “That next step in the SEC is probably a national championship for us. In this league, you skip steps. You don’t go from building a program up to get a conference championship, to national recognition, to making a big splash (like Oregon). In this league, you win the SEC West, and you can say what you want, vote however you want, but you’re the best team in the country.”

In other words, it’s like what Ricky Bobby said. In the SEC, if you’re not first,” you’re last.

But come on in Texas A&M, Texas, Missouri, Virginia — the fire’s fine. Come on out of the frying pan and into something worse than the fire. The hours are Hell, but the pay’s good.

And don’t even talk about recruiting.”
